The 35th annual K/D Salmon Tournament is underway in the waters of Lake Michigan off Kewaunee and Door counties.

The amateur sport fishing tournament that runs for nine consecutive days each summer. Somewhere between 2,300 and 3,000 contestants participate annually, and about $50,000 in cash and prizes is awarded. The heaviest fish caught will win the lucky fisherman $10,000 CASH. There are 45 daily port prize packages plus a payout that goes 100-200 places deep, depending on the year.

This year’s tournament opened Saturday, July 22, and runs through Sunday, July 30.

The second-day update as reported on the tourney’s Facebook page:

Jim Novak’s 27.73 weighed at Kap’s today (pictured) moved into the No. 2 spot, and was one of 71 20-pound-plus chinooks weighed opening weekend of the 35th annual Kewaunee/Door County Salmon Tournament.

Anglers battled rough seas and tough fishing after sunrise, and a small craft advisory is in effect through early Monday. Breezy, unsettled weather is predicted to continue throughout the week, with multiple direction shifts before gradually settling for the final weekend.
