Expected strong winds Friday afternoon and evening have led to a warning for swimmers in Lake Michigan just north of Kewaunee County.

The National Weather Service office in Green Bay has issued a beach hazards statement for 3 p.m. Friday through 1 a.m. Saturday for the beaches of Door County, including Rock Island State Beach, Baileys Harbor beaches and Whitefish Dunes Beach.

Strong northeast winds are expected to bring waves of 4 to 6 feet to the Lake Michigan shore through midnight Friday, resulting in dangerous swimming conditions.

“High wave action makes swimming difficult as waves on the Great Lakes occur in rapid succession,” the beach hazards statement said. “High wave action also leads to strong currents.”

Although the statement does not specifically mention the beaches of Kewaunee County, the Friday forecast calls for west northwest wind 9 to 14 mph increasing to 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon, with gusts as high as 36 mph possible.
