The Kewaunee City Council has appointed Fred Schnook to serve as its new city administrator, starting May 1. The decision followed an executive session Wednesday evening.

Schnook has served as executive director of a number of organizations, most recently the Community Action Coalition for South Central Wisconsin. His resume includes 15 years as CEO of the Northwest Wisconsin Workforce Investment Board and a stint as the mayor of Ashland from 2002 to 2006.

Fred Schnook said Thursday that he and his wife, Darlene, were so excited about his appointment as Kewaunee city administrator that they were coming to Kewaunee to go apartment hunting on Friday.

Interim Administrator Art Osten Jr. plans to stay on for about two weeks helping introduce Schnook to the community, staff and City Council and bring him up to speed on city operations and current projects.

Schnook has a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and is working on his Ph.D. in urban affairs from UW-Milwaukee, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in 1991.

But he has a blue-collar background; he once told a Madison reporter he still thinks of himself as a steelworker but went to school to become a white-collar professional after five layoffs from five factories.

Living now in Madison with his wife, Fred is looking for an apartment and hopes to eventually purchase a home in town.

A public meet-and-greet event is expected to be scheduled in the near future.
