Kate Phillips, a longtime volunteer and board member for Literacy Partners of Kewaunee County, received the Adult Volunteer of the Year Award on Thursday during the 44th annual WPS Volunteer Awards Breakfast in Green Bay.

“Kate has a passion to help others open doors through language,” read the citation. “In her work through Literacy Partners of Kewaunee County, she tutors and mentors members of the Hispanic community, helping them to learn the English language and in many cases prepare for further education.”

Phillips has put in more than 750 hours of one-and-one tutoring with her students and has hosted students from Guatemala in her home.

Recipients receive $500 to give to the nonprofit organization of their choice. The breakfast is hosted by the Volunteer Center of Brown County.
