Fundraising has produced enough revenue for improvements to the Kewaunee Pier Head Lighthouse to proceed. Scaffolding was scheduled to start going up Monday, with asbestos removal scheduled to begin April 17.
“The Kewaunee Pierhead Lighthouse has become a construction site. Please honor this for the sake of safety,” campaign organizers posted on Facebook over the weekend. “Updates will be posted as to the lighthouse progress. It’s really happening!!”
The lighthouse is listed on the Wisconsin Historical Register, and eligible for the National Register. The windows have been protecting the lighthouse since 1909 and need repair to the original condition so that the lighthouse can remain on the register.
The nonprofit Friends Of The Kewaunee Pier Head Lighthouse has been accepting donations to complete the window restoration since mid-December. The goal was $30,000.
Donations may be sent to the Kewaunee Nicolet Bank, 519 Main St., Kewaunee, WI 54216.
