The grounds to Algoma’s Shanty Days celebration, the city’s big three-day festival, open Friday afternoon, but the weekend really begins Thursday with the launch of the Shanty Days Fishing Contest and the annual Friends of the Library Book Sale and the Shanty Days Mayor’s Honoree Luncheon on Friday.

The fishing contest runs Thursday through Sunday in the waters of Lake Michigan; the luncheon is 11 a.m. Friday at the Hotel Stebbins, 201 Steele St., and the book sale is 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday at the Friends’ new year-round store, the Book Corner at 401 Third St.

Music, arts and crafts, games and children’s activities are scheduled all weekend, including the huge Shanty Days Parade at noon Saturday. Here is a link to a map of the grounds including the parade route.
