Scrappy Algoma graduate Taylor Schmidt, now a senior at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, has been named Women’s Basketball Player of the Year by the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Her teammate, Alex Richard of Kewaunee, received honorable mention in the all-conference team voting by league coaches.

The all-conference team press release:

University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh’s Taylor Schmidt was selected the Player of the Year to top the individuals chosen to the 2017 All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Women’s Basketball Team by the league coaches. In addition, UW-Oshkosh head coach Brad Fischer collected Coach of the Year honors.

Schmidt received first-team recognition for the third consecutive year. She is the third player in program history to secure the league’s top honor, joining Wendy Wangerin (1996) and Holly Spoo (1998). Schmidt ranks fifth in the conference with 44 steals and 37 three-point field goals made, seventh with a .359 three-point field goal percentage, ninth with a .750 free-throw percentage and 12th with 11.1 points per game. She has reached double figures in scoring in 18 games, including a season-high 20 points against UW-Eau Claire on Jan. 14.

Schmidt was also selected to the five-member All-Defensive Team. UW-Whitewater’s Malia Schmidt was chosen to the defensive squad for the second straight year.

Repeat selections on the first team from a season ago included: UW-Oshkosh’s Eliza Campbell; UW-River Falls’ Taylor Karge; and UW-Stevens Point’s Lauren Anklam. Anklam also added first team recognition in 2015.

Fischer captured the coaching award for the second time in his career (2013) after leading the Titans to the 12th WIAC regular-season championship in program history. UW-Oshkosh has also earned a spot in the NCAA Division III championship for the fourth straight year.

An All-Sportsmanship Team was chosen for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season. It included one member from each school.
