A ceremony scheduled for 6:15 p.m. Thursday (May 30) will open the 10th annual Lance Cpl. Dean D. Opicka Memorial Softball Tournament, which runs through Sunday at Casco Village Park.

Opicka, 29, died April 14, 2008, while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar province, Iraq. He was assigned to Marine Forces Reserves’ 2nd Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Milwaukee.

Dean was a 1997 graduate of Luxemburg-Casco High School and graduated from Carroll College in 2002. Before being deployed he had been teaching at the Wisconsin Career Academy in Milwaukee and at the Association for the Rights of Citizens with handicaps, where he worked with adults with disabilities.

Proceeds from the tournament support the Dean D. Opicka Memorial Fund, which provides scholarships and hardship awards for members of the community. This year it will award three $1,500 scholarships to honor the memory of Dean and to financially assist three well-rounded students who demonstrate a dedication to service. Over the years the fund has raised more than $100,000 to help the community.

In addition to the softball, the weekend includes a poker run on Saturday, leaving from Luxemburg-Casco Middle School, 619 Church St., Casco, with stops at CZ’s Bushville Lanes, Jeff’s Sports Bar, Joe Rouer’s, Fat Boyz and Janda’s.

A raffle will be underway all weekend with the drawing set for 4:30 p.m. Sunday. Also Sunday is a booyah sale, starting at 10 a.m. and continuing until it’s all gone. Food and beverages will be available at the park all weekend.
