Algoma officials are declaring the third annual Freeze the Gain Challenge a success and congratulating those Kewaunee County residents who participated.
The purpose of the challenge was to encourages county citizens to make healthy choices during the holiday season. Participants were given a weekly calendars and emails with tips to stay active, make healthier food choices and avoid holiday weight gain.
The Freeze the Gain challenge was made possible by partners Algoma Area Chamber of Commerce, Bellin Health, Live Algoma, and the Algoma Community Wellness Center.
The 2018-19 challenge spread out to include participants in Algoma, Kewaunee, Luxemburg, and Casco.
A total of 215 participants first weighed in after Thanksgiving and weighed out Jan. 7. The Algoma Area Chamber said 79 percent of the original group weighed out, and of those 85 percent maintained or lost weight.
Participants also donated more than 350 pounds of items for the Kewaunee County Food Pantry.
Organizers also announced winners of a related raffle from participating communities:
Algoma – Susie Kezo, Amy Schoenberger, Carol Zimmer, Gretchen Wilson and Elmer Willems.
Luxemburg-Casco – Brenda Johnson, Brenda Touchinski, Greg Klaubauf, Jill Gilson, Kathy Nelson and Jason Pekarek.
Kewaunee – Cheryl Urban, Sue Kinstetter and Louise Wolfe.
