The Aging & Disability Resource Center of the Lakeshore, along with St. John Lutheran Church in Rankin, will be offering “Stepping On,” a falls prevention workshop.

The seven-week workshop is scheduled for 10 a.m.-noon Mondays from April 13 through June 1 (no class May 25) at the church, E5221 Church Road west of Algoma. Attendance at all seven sessions is highly encouraged, as each session builds upon previous skills acquired. Participants must pre-register to attend.

Stepping On is described as a fun and interactive evidence-based falls prevention program aimed at educating participants and building confidence in order to reduce and/or eliminate falls. The Stepping On Program focuses on how strength and balancing exercises, medication management, home and community safety, footwear, vision, and mobility are important in preventing falls.

The Stepping On Program is led by trained leaders. Local guest experts also assist by providing information on exercise, vision, safety and medications. The guest list includes a physical therapist or occupational therapist, low vision specialist, pharmacist, and community safety specialist.

It is estimated that one in four people 65 and older fall at least once per year. Many of these falls result in broken bones and other types of disabilities, hospitalizations, and in some cases, even death. In addition to physical injury, victims of falls often lose their sense of confidence and become less independent.

A suggested donation of $10 is collected at the first class, to help defray the cost of the materials provided.
