The Algoma Area Chamber of Commerce has renamed its annual awards and is seeking nominations for the newly rechristened Beacon Awards.

The annual awards banquet for a number of years have been known as BIE – Business, Industry, and Education Award. The banquet is scheduled for April 22 at the Hotel Stebbins.

“‘Beacon’ captures the essence of our signature lighthouse and promotes a feeling of everlasting strength and bright rays of light in our community,” said Sara Krouse, the chamber’s executive director. “The businesses and people who will be nominated for these awards embody this sentiment.”

Public nominations are sought for:

+ Business Award: recognition of community leadership, business leadership or industry leadership.

+ Lighthouse Award: a volunteer or community person that has made a significant impact in the Algoma area.

+ Education Award: educator or school employee who goes above and beyond to meet the needs of students, peer or education community.

+ Rising Star Award: new business or member of note.

+ Improvement “Rose” Recognition: any business nominated by the public/membership for notable improvements to their business.

Another new addition is the Employee of the Year Award, which is open for nomination only to Algoma Chamber business members. It provides an opportunity for a member to nominate an outstanding employee who will be recognized by both the business and the chamber at the banquet.

More information about the April 22 banquet will be announced at a future date.
