When Heidi Raak was growing up in a small town in western Pennsylvania, the community always started its Independence Day festivities with a colorful bicycle parade in the neighborhood.

Now Raak, owner of Yardstick Books in Algoma, is bringing this childhood memory to life in her new home. The public is invited to Yardstick Books, 317 Steele St., at 9 a.m. Thursday (July 4) for an old-fashioned Independence Day bicycle parade.

Children and their parents are encouraged to decorate their bicycles, strollers, scooters, wagons, etc. to celebrate the holiday. Decorated dogs are welcome. Participants are encouraged to arrive around 8:45 a.m. to line up before the parade starts at 9 a.m. The parade will travel around the block and refreshments will be served.

Local judges will choose best decorated bike, most unusual design and more.

Throughout the month of June, Yardstick has been providing instructions and tips on how to make and mount your decorations and they’ll have some supplies available at the store. Check Yardstick’s Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/yardstickalgoma/) for updates. Limited supplies will be available at the store for decorating.

Yardstick’s regular hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and noon-4 p.m. Sunday and Monday. Stop in for questions and ideas.
