Summer Construction in Full Swing for Kewaunee County
Work is underway on the new County Road S bridge in downtown Algoma over the Ahnapee River.
The footprint of the new bridge will remain the same. It will be about a foot higher than the old bridge and will look similar to the Fourth Street (state Highway 42) bridge, which serves as the detour.
The new bridge is scheduled to be ready for traffic by mid-November.
Meanwhile, the Kewaunee County Highway Department is giving residents and visitors a heads up on summer construction that will limit access to County Road E as well as the Ahnapee State Trail in Kewaunee.
Next week, work will begin on replacing the pavement of County Road E from Miller Street to the bridge over the Ahnapee State Trail.
Then, starting the last week of July, County Road E will be closed from Miller Street to County Road FF to replace the bridge over Ahnapee State Trail. Drivers will be detoured onto State Highway 42 and County Road FF. Only local residents will have access to E during construction.
Also, the Ahnapee State Trail will be closed in the construction zone. The detour for trail users will be County Road C to Fifth Street to Miller Street. Detour signage will be posted.
In addition, the City of Kewaunee will be working on sewer main, water main, storm sewer, sidewalk, curb and gutter replacement on River Road from Miller Street to First Street beginning the end of August. River Road will be open to local residents only. Traffic will be detoured onto Miller Street.
These projects are expected to be completed by mid-October, weather permitting.
