Dogs will be allowed (on leashes) on Algoma’s Crescent Beach and boardwalk year-round, not just the off-season, after the City Council passed an amended ordinance Monday.
Under the code originally passed in 2012, dogs have been allowed between Oct. 1 and May 1 as long as they’re on a leash of 6 feet or less. Dogs are prohibited from other Algoma public parks.
The 2012 resolution establishing the old policy said the presence of dogs could “act as a deterrent to the birds” in an effort to reduce the amount of goose and other animal waste on the beach.
The new amendment allows dogs to be walked along the public portions of the beach and boardwalk year-round.
“This will be very beneficial to our community members who enjoy walking their dogs as well as visitors coming through Algoma in the warmer months,” the Algoma Youth Club said in a Facebook post.
