More than seven years have passed since an auto accident claimed the life of Sara Malay, director of the Kewaunee County Aging Service Unit, and a food and hygiene drive organized in her memory is still going strong.

In the “Giving for Sara Food & Hygiene Drive,” the Kewaunee County Public Health and Human Services departments are accepting donations of nonperishable healthy foods and personal hygiene products, as well as monetary funds, to stock the shelves at area food pantries and help community members who are in need and served by the county.

Due to COVID-19, mailed monetary donations are highly encouraged this year in place of in-person donations. Checks should be made payable to Kewaunee County with a notation of “Giving for Sara Food & Hygiene Drive.” Receipts will be available. Donations will be accepted from now through Dec. 31 at Kewaunee County Health & Human Services, 810 Lincoln St., Kewaunee, WI 54216.

People who wish to drop off monetary donations or nonperishable healthy foods and personal hygiene products can still safely do so with social distancing and face masking.

The suggested list of items to donate includes: canned chicken or tuna (packed in water), canned fruit or fruit cups (packed in water or fruit juice), healthy cereal or granola bars, as well as shampoo, conditioner, diapers, baby wipes, deodorant and soap. Please check the “Best Used By” dates; expired items cannot be accepted.

For more information, call the Kewaunee County Public Health Department at 920-388-7160.
