The public is invited to attend a ribbon cutting for the new kayak and paddle board rental business, Explore Algoma, at noon Friday (June 21) at its location – the “Kayak Shack” – at Olson Park, N8108 Wisconsin 42.

Explore Algoma offers rental options for single and tandem kayaks and stand up paddle boards at hourly and daily rates. The kayak launch into the Ahnapee River is just steps away.

Couple and co-owners Don Chic and Katie Crossman opened the business the first weekend in June. They are renting the shed from the city of Algoma for the operation.

We live in De Pere. We keep our boat at the marina and Algoma is our favorite place. Donnie and his dad have been coming here for 30 years. Katie’s Great Grandpa used to take her mom to Algoma in the 1960’s to gather rocks for his rock garden. She remembers going to the beach and the beauty of the lake. Algoma has welcomed us for generations and we consider it our second home.

What do you find most interesting about your business or industry?

A kayak rental business is a great way to meet people. Most of the customers are here for recreational reasons which means they are relaxed, Happy, and they are ready to learn new things. Most of the folks we meet are interested and active in the outdoors. We love being a part of connecting people to nature. It also is nice we can see people at their happiest. On vacation or locals out for a relaxing paddle. It is easy to smile when everyone around you is happy.

What is one thing you want people to know about your business?

We are here for the community. We love nature and want to contribute to preserving the environment. We would love to be part of keeping the environment viable for tourism as well as supporting the locals.

What is your favorite thing about the Algoma community?

The people! They are so friendly and willing to help. They really make us feel like family. We are also amazed by the rich history of the area and how the local community has been able to make generations of travelers feel welcome and share its beauty.
