Nearly four dozen people turned out April 12 in Kewaunee for the Hands Around the Courthouse stand against domestic violence.

“The goal of the event was to raise awareness about child abuse and sexual assault in our community,” said Samantha, a victim advocate with the Violence Intervention Project, one of the host organizations. “We want people to know that it happens here and that it happens more than people recognize. We also want people to know that there is help for victims and their families.”

VIP worked with Kewaunee County Human Services and the local Victim/Witness Program.

“We all work together to ensure that victims are receiving the help that they need to recover from abuse,” Samantha said.

A display of jeans decorated by survivors was also set up in anticipation of Denim Day on April 26, another event taking place in Kewaunee County during Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
