The Hometown Pharmacy chain is stepping in to fill the void left by the planned closing of Shopko Hometown Kewaunee, Mayor Sandi Christman announced Friday (March 15).

“I just received a notice from Hometown Pharmacy that they signed the lease today on the previous Cenex/Lakeshore Pizza Building on Milwaukee Street,” Christman said in a Facebook post. “They are targeting June 1 to open. Hometown Pharmacy is planning a press release in the near future.”

The community stood to be without a local pharmacy after the announcement that the Shopko Hometown store would be closing by early May. Shopko was in the process of shedding many of its stores in hopes of attracting a buyer, but it was revealed Monday (March 18) that all remaining stores also will be closed by mid-June.

Hometown Pharmacy is a growing chain of locally-owned Midwest stores founded with more than 40 locations in Wisconsin, including Algoma and Sturgeon Bay.
