Dozens of handmade fabric face masks that had been donated by the Kewaunee Artisan Center were the first school supply chosen by families helped through the Kewaunee County Public Health Department’s Annual Back to School Program.
More than 320 children were able to point to and choose from over 4,000 donated school supplies made available on Aug. 19 at Lakehaven Hall in Kewaunee. Supplies included backpacks, notebooks, folders, crayons, markers, scissors, glue, tissues, face masks, and hygiene bags packed with toothpaste, shampoo and soap.
“Due to COVID-19, our focus was to organize a safe distribution,” said Cindy Kinnard, RN, director of the Kewaunee County Public Health Department. “We had volunteers prepackage supplies, we expanded the duration of the event to space out pick-up times, we placed social distancing markers on the floor, and items were handled by volunteers at each supply station, who were wearing face masks and gloves, instead of being directly picked up by participants.
Many county families rely on the Back to School Program, Kinnard said.
“With COVID-19 causing job loss, layoffs or reduced hours, this program has helped some more than ever before, she said.
The Public Health Department added special thanks to the Literacy Partners of Kewaunee County, Inc. for donated toothbrushes, the “Weather Warm-Up” project organized by the Cullen Family for donated coats and sweatshirts, and the board of Lakehaven Hall for the donated event space.
The mission of the Back to School program is to help Kewaunee County families who are on WIC, Food Share or Badger Care as well as those who partake in the free or reduced meal programs or have found themselves in an emergency situation.
