Kewaunee County Sheriff Matt Joski on Thursday (July 30) encouraged county residents to comply with the mandatory mask order issued earlier in the day by Gov. Tony Evers.

The order requires face coverings to be worn whenever people are indoors or in an enclosed space, other than a private residence, and other people are present in the same room or space. It takes effect at one midnight past midnight Saturday (Aug. 1).

“Despite the hard work Wisconsinites have done to slow the spread of COVID-19, data shows a new and concerning spike in infections … (and) based on data collected by the Department of Health Services, the State of Wisconsin has experienced a drastic rise in COVID-19 cases throughout the entire state, with 61 of 72 counties (84 percent) representing 96 percent of the state’s population experiencing high COVID-19 activity,” Evers’ order states.

Joski took to social media to post a message asking for understanding on all sides of the issue.

Earlier today, the Governor released Order #82 which mandates the statewide wearing of masks in all enclosed spaces as well as in outdoor areas where social distancing cannot be maintained. While the Kewaunee County Sheriff’s Department will continue to serve our community and to do our part to keep our neighbors safe, is important to note that due to our limited resources, we cannot and will not be able to respond to each and every complaint of an individual not wearing a mask where another may feel it is required.

It also important to note that there are circumstances in which an individual may not be able to wear a mask and we would ask that as in any other part of our daily lives, we show empathy and understanding. If you see an individual not wearing a mask which makes you uncomfortable, please exercise social distancing. If you are one of those individuals who can not wear a mask, be sensitive to those around you as well and do your best to create distance.

I have no doubt we will make it through these challenging times and be a stronger community for what we have been through together.
