History was made when the winners of the nine-day K/D Salmon Tournament were announced Monday night, as three of the top six spots were earned by women anglers.
That includes the first-place, $10,000 cash prize to Brigette Mullen of Hayward (pictured), who registered a 30.67-pound salmon at the Baileys Harbor weigh station on July 24.
Tournament organizers said the big fish was “taken on a flasher/fly behind a Dipsy Diver over 130 feet of water near Baileys Harbor.” Mullen was on board her brother Bryan Pelant’s boat.
Riley Mancl of Wisconsin Rapids, fishing out of Kewaunee Harbor, took two of the first four spots, earning $7,000 and a $500 Howie’s Tackle copper combo rod and reel tackle package.
Six of the top 10 were caught in Lake Michigan off Kewaunee or Algoma.
The amateur sport fishing tournament draws between 2,500 and 3,000 contestants participate annually, and about $50,000 in cash and prizes is awarded.
There were 51 salmon of 25 pounds and larger, and more than 250 that were ar least 20 pounds. The tournament will pay down 155 places, to 21.96 pounds. The entire payout, including bonus prizes provided by Shipyard Island Marina, Howie’s Tackle, Nicolet Bank, Kinn’s Sport Fishing and Fishin’ Magician charters, were expected to be posted later on Tuesday.
The top 10 combined to win more than $25,000 in cash and prizes. The other half of the $50,000 pot was split among the remaining 145 places, 45 port prizes, early bird prizes and a separate, lucky winner of a Yamaha 9.9 motor.
