The upcoming closure and capping of the Kewaunee County Landfill is continuing on schedule.
County officials are reminding residents tha the last day solid waste will be accepted at the site while it’s under the operation of Kewaunee County is May 25.
Kewaunee County opened the landfill in 1983 and after operation and construction of Phase I and Phase II, the County Board in 2015 approved a resolution to not pursue seeking a license for Phase III. This was due to economic projections that included uncertain solid waste volume, regulatory climate and costs.
Last year the county began the request-for-proposal process to cap the landfill with an estimated expense of approximately $1.1 million for engineering and construction.
Kewaunee County will be leasing the building at the landfill and approximately five acres of land to Blue Water Services Ltd. of Kewaunee, which plans to operate a waste transfer and recycling station under the name of Riverview Transfer Inc.
Blue Water plans to open to the public for disposal needs on Tuesday, May 29.
