The City of Kewaunee has received a $60,000 grant to use toward public access at the Salmon Harbor Marina, the largest of 39 grants awarded through the Department of Administration’s Wisconsin Coastal Management Program.

In its 42nd year, the program aims to protect and improve the Great Lakes resources across Wisconsin’s coastal communities.

While the state grant isn’t near enough for the multi-million-dollar asking price for Salmon Harbor, Kewaunee City Administrator Fred Schnook said the city is working on acquiring additional grants, including a federal grant that could allow the purchase of the entire property to ensure the city has a boat launch facility.

The city’s public launch (pictured May 25) has been unusable the past two summers due to record high water levels.
