Add Kewaunee to the list of area cities without a public fireworks display this Independence Day.

The Kewaunee Area Chamber of Commerce announced Friday that its annual Independence Day celebration has been canceled “with heavy hearts.”

“Because of you, the event has grown into a large, well-attended, family-fun event. The size of our event prevents us from complying with social distancing restrictions, causing us to cancel,” said the announcement from Jamie Sperber, executive coordinator of the Chamber. “Keeping our community safe and healthy is our top priority. Next year, we can all gather once again, enjoying an even bigger and better firework show by the Brown family, and celebrate with music, food and fun! Stay well. We cannot wait to celebrate with you next year!”

Communities from Door County to Green Bay have been calling off their Fourth of July celebrations because of restrictions on large gatherings imposed because of concerns about COVID-19.
