Press release

The Luxemburg-Casco School District will hold a community celebration to officially open its new Gymnasium and Wrestling Room. The event will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, January 26, in the new Gym, located at the north end of the high school.

“We are excited to share our new athletic facilities with the Luxemburg-Casco community which has made them possible,” says District Superintendent Glenn Schlender. “People have watched with great interest over the last eight months as the new Gym and Wrestling Room rose from the ground. This is a great opportunity for everyone to see all aspects of the new facilities that will serve L-C for decades to come before regular use begins in the days to follow.”

Doors for the event will open at 2:30 p.m., with attendees entering through the main entrance of the new Gymnasium on the west side of the building.

Members of the Luxemburg-Casco High School boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball teams will hold a shootaround on the new Gym floor. The L-C band, choir and dance team also will perform.

In the new Wrestling Room, a youth wrestling clinic will be led by University of Wisconsin-Madison Head Wrestling Coach Chris Bono and Associate Head Coach Jon Reader. Members of the L-C varsity wrestling team will assist with the clinic.

Following a short program and ribbon-cutting ceremony, community members will have the opportunity to take self-guided tours of the new facilities. These include the new Gymnasium and Wrestling Room, new team locker rooms and other public areas. Luxemburg-Casco student-athletes, including members of the state champion girls’ volleyball team, will be stationed throughout to provide information on each new area.

The new three-station Gymnasium, which is twice the size of the district’s existing facility, will allow multiple teams to practice simultaneously. It also features expanded bleacher seating, increasing capacity for graduation and athletic events.

Refreshments will be provided at the event through the facility’s upgraded concessions area.

“We wouldn’t be here today without those in the community who started this process years ago by engaging with us to help define needs,” Schlender says. “It also is important to recognize others who have played an important role in bringing this component of the referendum project to completion. We thank our project manager, Nexus Solutions, particularly Jeff Mangan and Mike Frailing, for their strong management. We also thank general contractors SMA Construction Services and M.R. Neubert Construction, along with the many sub-contractors who have been part of the project.

“We equally appreciate the patience of our students, teachers and staff, who operate around the project work on a daily basis.”

Speakers at the event will include Schlender, Luxemburg-Casco Board of Education President Mike Driedric and Mangan.

The Luxemburg-Casco School District undertook a long-range facilities plan in the spring of 2015. Following engagement with the local community, two referendum questions were put before voters in April 2018; both passed.

Ground was broken in May 2019 on the new Gymnasium and Wrestling Room, which represents a major portion of the $27.8-million referendum projects. A new Middle School, relocated to Luxemburg from Casco, is the other significant aspect of the projects; construction continues on that building, which is expected to be ready for use in the 2020-21 academic year.

In the event of inclement weather conditions on January 26, a backup date for the event – Wednesday, January 29, at 6 p.m. – has been established.
