Issues that the public has raised during Kewaunee County Land & Water Committee meetings are expected to get an airing when the committee holds its regular August meeting.

Prior to the general lockdown ordered over COVID-19 concerns, the committee had been compiling a list of issues that regularly come up during the panel’s Public Comment forum, but the matters were waylaid for a few months while citizens were banned from attending in person and comments were limited to written communications.

“I’m thinking maybe next month we could just have some discussion about it, so we know what items the public is asking us about and then we can maybe put some priority on that list,” said Supervisor Chuck Wagner, the committee chairman.

Supervisor Aaron Augustian said some of the issues are under state jurisdiction and out of the county’s control, but County Conservationist Davina Bonness said she prefers to leave those issues on the list.

“I’ll go through the list and I’ll star the ones that we don’t have authority or jurisdiction for, so then the public knows that it’s on the list and we didn’t just say OK, we don’t care about that item,” Bonness said.

The committee always opens its meetings with public comment. At the July meeting a letter was read from Sue Weisser, a West Kewaunee resident, detailing a number of land and water conservation issues she believes the county needs to tackle, and Joe Musiel of Lincoln discussed his concerns over the years about agricultural runoff and damage done to the East Twin River trout habitat from discharges at the Agropur plant south of Luxemburg.

“The recent permits and former permits had nothing to do science,” Musiel said this month. “They were granted because Wisconsin became No. 2 in dairy to California, and they were granted blindly with no adherence to any rules, law, statute, you name it.”

The next committee meeting is scheduled for 8:15 a.m. Aug. 11 at the Exhibition Building, 625 Third St., Luxemburg.
