The relatively mild winter has taken its toll on the Kewaunee County snowmobiling community.

All snowmobile trails across the county closed on Sunday (Feb. 23) after opening just over a week ago, due to less than ideal conditions.

Six snowmobile clubs groom and maintain the nearly 205 miles of trails as well as give condition updates to Kewaunee County Promotions & Recreation.

The warmer winter temperatures, into the 40s over the weekend, caused a deteriorating snow base, officials said.

The trail system is divided into four sections: Section 1 (Red River), Section 2 (Algoma, Ahnapee, Pierce, Lincoln), Section 3 (Luxemburg, Montpelier), and Section 4 (Casco, Franklin, Kewaunee, West Kewaunee).

The Kewaunee County Promotions & Recreation Department keeps trail conditions up to date on its 24/7 hotline, 920-388-7199. Snowmobilers are urged to call the hotline before going out to get the latest condition report.
