The state Department of Transportation is taking public comment through Oct. 30 on a resurfacing project for state Highway 54 between Luxemburg and Casco. The work is planned for 2024 but could be done a year earlier if funding becomes available.

Normally the DOT would hold a public informational meeting about a project like this one, but officials say they have no plans to hold such a session, citing public health concerns.

The work is planned along Highway 54 from a quarter-mile north of Rockledge Road on the east side of the village of Luxemburg to Sunset Avenue in the city of Algoma, including all through the village of Casco.

The DOT plans to mill and overlay the existing asphalt pavement, replace beam guards, replace culvert pipes and improve drainage, widen existing asphalt shoulders to 5 feet, mill and overlay parking lanes along the highway in the village of Casco, and replace curb ramp, storm sewer, curb and gutter within the village of Casco.

Final plans should be drafted by November 2022 and a contractor selected in the fall of 2023.
