High water levels on Lake Michigan have forced Algoma’s Shanty Days to cancel this year’s fireworks display at the popular August festival.
The Algoma Area Chamber of Commerce released this statement Thursday:
The power and beauty of Lake Michigan is one of our largest economic drivers in the Algoma area. Unfortunately, her show of strength is enough to interrupt and threaten even our most favorite of activities – the Shanty Day Fireworks. Due to rising water levels, the Shanty Days Fireworks will not be held this year. Water levels determine how far down the breakwater the fireworks can be lit. Without enough distance away from the public, boats and campers, safety is a concern for all. We thank you in advance for your understanding and patience.
This year’s Shanty Days celebration is scheduled for Aug. 10-12.
