Two weekly working groups are the first fruit of a new Kewaunee County Public Health Department wellness initiative called “Get Healthy Kewaunee County.”

The initiative was formed in response to the findings of the county’s most recent Community Health Assessment. The Nutrition and Physical Activity Work Group has been meeting monthly to look at ways to promote health and wellness within the community through nutrition and physical activity.

Beginning in May, Prevea Health will lead a walking group in Luxemburg that will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesdays at Harvest Community Church, E1479 Rockledge Road, and will walk for approximately one hour. On Wednesday evenings, Door County Medical Center of Algoma will lead a walking group in the Algoma that will meet at the Algoma Community Wellness Center (attached to the Algoma High School) at 6 p.m. and walk for approximately one hour. The auxiliary gym will be used in inclement weather.

A walking group within the city of Kewaunee is expected to be coming soon.

“It’s important for our residents to take charge of their health,” said Cindy Kinnard, RN, director of the Kewaunee County Public Health Department. “Being healthy and staying fit can be fun and walking is a great way to prevent future chronic disease.”

Kinnard said the department invites anyone interested in walking to join one or both groups. Friends, family and pets are welcome.

Get Healthy is also working with local grocery stores to sponsor a healthy recipe of the week. Ingredients for the healthy recipe will be featured in the store near the recipe so shopping will be made easy. In addition, informational displays will be featured within stores and area businesses promoting healthy nutrition concepts.
